Bob Lewis Mid-Autumn Challenge - Winners: Jeff Sheldon and Nora Hulton

Race Commentary by Mary Schafer.... November 7, 2009

Overheard at the starting line: "Why is it always raining on the Jeep Trail?" This reporter could go on about the metaphysical, psychological, paranormal, and extracurricular reasons about rain and the Jeep Trail but it is really time to just accept that on an ordinarily beautiful day in Roxbury, it will be raining on the Jeep Trail. That said, it was a beautiful day in Roxbury for racing.

In an exciting change of events, the Bob Lewis Mid-Autumn Challenge was expanded to include a quiz on pop music trivia, spelling, and long division in addition to the Jeep Trail Run. “It is important for us to break a mental sweat, too,” said race namesake and director, Bob Lewis. This week’s winner is Amanda, who knew that the song “One Night in Bangkok” is from the musical “Chess” with music written by former members of ABBA and lyrics by Tim Rice, correctly spelled “recidivism”, and divided 254 by 17. Way to go Amanda! Other contenders included Jeff, who commented, “I had a great run, so I was optimistic about my chances, but was done for when Amanda took the remainder to 6 decimals on the long division. I really thought I could keep going at two, but she pulled so far ahead I couldn’t keep up.” Kim was an early leader in the spelling division by refusing to spell “irregardless” since it is not actually a word. “I will not support bad grammar. Period.” Bob was naturally the leader in pop music trivia. Not even Casey Kasem knows as much as Bob!

This week's Chris Norris fact: When Chris Norris does division, there are no remainders. Take that, prime numbers! .

Next week is the only-in-Roxbury 11.2 mile Botsford Hill ascent and 3.95 mile alternate Jeep Trail (forecast = rain). You heard it here first, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
