Race Commentary by Mary Schafer.... December 5, 2009
And so we conclude a remarkable, record breaking year at the Roxbury Races. Remember our Runner's World article? The 50+ runners each week during spring? The costumes and hot air balloons from the Ed Sandifer Challenge? And so we celebrated the best way we know how--by running up Chalybes. As usual, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Also as usual, Jeff Sheldon took the lead (though powered by unusual rage) and finished first overall in 13:42. Again, by winning he escapes mocking for his arm warmers. Mary Schafer was first on the women's side and 16th overall in 17:45. She was overheard saying, "Why is everyone going so fast? It's our last race of the season, can't we slow down and have fun?" The answer is an obvious and resounding "no". Thanks to our tremendous race directors, Bob Lewis and Scott Benjamin, for their dedication and hard work so that we may all run in Roxbury almost every Saturday. Also thanks to Les Freres Deming for maintaining the website, results, and points as we await the glorious return of WebGuy. In addition to the traditional Roxbury Awards, the Race Report would like to recognize the following runners for their contributions to our races: "There's No Place Like Home" Madelyn Bussom for her sparkly shoes "All Creatures Great and Small" Nate Mahrer for his commitment to the greater Roxbury turtle community "Cool Under Fire" Paul Butler Best Nickname: Charlie Best Dressed: Lynn Zuback "Houdini's Got Nothin' On Me" tie: Dan Lynch and the Bussom Family And, of course, the Chris Norris fact of the week: Chris Norris' refrigerator IS running, but you'll never catch it. Hope to see everyone next week for the running extravaganza that is the Roxbury Marathon, Half-Marathon, and Marathon Relay!
