So when nature waits until the moment everyone heads for the starting line to really let fly with the downpour, it should be a sign that maybe this race running is not the best course of action, right? Right. Unless you happen to be at the Roxbury starting line, in which case you simply complain about gettin' this show on the road. And so we ran the 6.6 mile Sentry Hill course in generally appalling conditions, spanning the spectrum of slightly sprinkling to downright deluge. Winners were Chris Scannell in 41:20 and Marge DeMarrais in 46:03.
Dirk had the benefit of having just run 26.2 miles in pouring rain to stay in the dry comfort of his car and photograph the unfolding madness. "You're mad! The lot of you! Mad, I say!" It was unclear if his comments were directed at runners or mosquitos. Brian "Juice Box" vandersquirted unsuspecting runners and photographers, as if everyone wasn't wet enough from the drenching rain. Congratulations to Ryan, who at last! finished in front of Blake. Stephanie clearly expressed what we all think going up Apple Lane, though this being a family publication, will not repeat. Paul did his best congressman impersonation, going shirtless and threatening to tweet his pecs.
Since some of you still don't get it--when you hear "Car Up/Back!" it does not mean stay in the middle of the road, randomly switch sides of the road, cluster up, or wave to cars to slow down. It does mean get your (dumb) self to the nearest side of the road, single file, so the car can go by without hitting you. If this is too difficult for you, please run elsewhere. Or consider participating in a sport that requires even less brains than running.
Congratulations to everyone who ran the Litchfield Hills Road Race on Sunday! Next Saturday we will meet at the same time, same place for the Ranney/Hemlock combo. See you then!
