Race Report by Mary Schafer

There are two certainties in life: death and taxes. A third if you run in Roxbury: hills. All three were, unfortunately, glaringly evident this past week. This report will leave the former to philosophers and politicians and focus on the latter. A gorgeous spring morning saw us hoofing up the back side of Ranney and then up Hemlock, a course all agreed is more difficult than it seems but easier than running the reverse. Winners were Ken Merrick in 25:07 and Theresa Krebs in 29:13.

After an emotionally exhausting week for the entire running community, it was great to see so many Roxbury runners sporting Boston Marathon/Red Sox/Harvard/etc gear. Most impressive was the wide range of vintages of Boston Marathon shirts, from 1987 to 2012! Perhaps even more impressive is that the shirt from 1987 had survived this long without disintegrating.

Even though he said his run "sucked" it was great to see Eric back on the race course this week. Also welcome back to John and a huge congratulations to the entire Adomelis team. Michael was married two weeks ago and his parents are rumored to have rocked the reception. Mo turned up for her first race of the year and quickly swept to the top of the best dressed list. A word of warning: don't go tricking Roxbury runners about your name, say by signing in as James but introducing yourself as Jim. Next thing you know, you'll end up with a sassy nickname like Jobin. There has been an unfortunate rash of falls by Roxbury runners in the last week, resulting in a lot of unfortunate road rash. Be safe out there, everyone.

Congratulations to everyone who ran the Jack Bristol Ultras at Lake Waramaug on Sunday! Brian Vanderheiden placed third in the 50 miler (7:29:03), while Chris Deming (5th / 4:18:04), LeeAnne Zarger (16th / 8:25:11) and Mo Van Moffaert (15th / 7:50:58) completed the 50k course. Mark LoSacco sustained an injury he couldn't overcome and will certainly be back next year.

Join us this Saturday for the 4.3 mile Larry Kershnar Mid-spring Challenge. There will be a $5 entry fee that will be donated to the Roxbury Park Improvement Fund. See you there!
