Race Report by Mary Schafer

So this writer is feeling better and better about her break-up with weather.com. According to those who checked, there was a 0% chance of rain at 8am or 9am on Saturday morning. This information was relayed as my shoes were being thoroughly soaked by monsoon-like rains at the 8:30 start. The downpour conveniently tapered off as soon as the pack reached South Street and all of our shoes were soaked through. An important question was raised: what's worse? Getting soaked or enduring the mockery of fellow runners for staying in the car? Discuss.

The winner's of this week's 3.6 miles over Highbridge Road and up the Jeep trail were Ken Merrick in 22:01 and Theresa Krebs in 26:41. For those of you wondering what inspired this new course, it is the brainchild of race director, Scott Benjamin, and replaces the course from last year that required passing and crossing through the South/Wellers/67 intersection twice. Safety first, people!

Speaking of safety: if you have to ask if you stink, well, you probably do. (And this means stink in the literal, not figurative, sense.) Performance fabric does not react well with fabric softener, skip it when you wash your running clothes. Also, adding a scoop of Oxyclean to the wash with your regular laundry soap can help, too. Seriously. For all of us.

Welcome back to Nora, who has been working way to hard this summer. Also good to see Brian back on the course. Congratulations to Alison who arrived just in time to stay dry and somehow run most of us down anyway.

Next week is the 5-mile Bill Burley Midsummer Championship over the hilly Squire hills. There will be a $5 entry fee. See you then!
